Hipster and Fandom Karp were twin sisters and mortal enemies. Hipster never stopped talking about how she was born first, and Fandom took revenge by constantly stealing Hipster’s stuff, or interpreting everything she said as something completely unintended. Generally, they ignored each other, a feat made easier by the fact that Hipster slept at night (in fact, she liked to go to bed and wake up early, before anyone else, and enjoy the solitude) and Fandom was mostly nocturnal. They would literally pass each other in the kitchen at 5am, Fandom putting away the dishes from her midnight snack before going to bed and Hipster dressed for the day, armed with her camera, ready to go take a walk in the pre-dawn light. They would nod at each other, maybe say hi, then go their separate ways.

They understood each other better than anyone else. Hipster had a group of associates with whom she spent time discussing deep things; she usually updated her blog via phone. Fandom rarely left the house, but chatted constantly (by typing) with people across the world. Yet ultimately, it was each other who they leaned on when the Zuckerberg kids across the street laughed at their apparent lack of friends, or when (god forbid) stupid, low-tech people were accidentally involved. Because Fandom could get just as deep as Hipster, and Hipster could just just as intense about things as Fandom, and they were sisters.

Yesterday my mom posted a picture on Facebook of my 5 year old brother Sam wearing a pair of shoes he picked out for his first day of preschool.

She explained to him in the store that they were really made for girls. Sam then told her that he didn’t care and that “ninjas can wear pink shoes too.”

Sam went to preschool and got several compliments on his new shoes. Not one kid said anything negative toward him about it.

However, my mom received about 20 comments on the photo from various family members saying how “wrong” it is and how “things like this will affect him socially” and, put most eloquently by my great aunt, “that shit will turn him gay.”

My mom then deleted the photo and told Sam that he can wear whatever he wants to preschool, that it’s his decision. If he wants to wear pink shoes, he can wear pink shoes.

Sam then explained to her that he didn’t like them because they were pink, he liked them because they were “made out of zebras” and zebras are his favorite animal :)

What does it say about society when a group of adults could stand to take a lesson in humanity from a class of preschoolers?

I really would love to see that crossover, repeatedly, in every possible position. Even if it would end in tears because let’s be real, everything the Winchesters touch ends in tears. Poor little shits.

“Look kid,” Sam says. It’s the third time he’s tried the good cop routine and Dean can hear it wearing thin. “We know you had nothing to do with the murders. But we also know you’re not the only werewolf in town.”

The kid tips his head and sucks on his lips, the total absence of fucks glaringly obvious. Dean is both frustrated as hell and grudgingly impressed because, hell, they’ve dealt with demons less sassy than this.

Sam sighs, and Dean has to cough into his hand to keep from laughing because that particular brand of exasperation is usually reserved for him. “Just be straight with us.”

For some reason, that’s hilarious. It takes a second before Dean remembers the dude they’d seen the kid with before they’d picked him up. Big, serial killer looking guy, sporting leather and a possessive hand on kid-snark’s back. Oh man.

Dean snorts and gives Sam patented ‘what? it’s funny’ shoulders when it earns him a glare.

“Trust me, dude,” the kid says. “I’m being as straight with you as…well, I was gonna say humanly possible but…”

A flash of canines has Sam rolling his eyes and sue him, Dean sorta wants to high-five the kid. You know you’ve been hunting for too long when you start rooting for your mark.

“You’re driving a stolen car,” Sam says. “You’re carrying a fake ID. Every word out of your mouth so far has been bullshit-”

“Says the hunter posing as an FBI agent,” the kid says, tapping a nonchalant beat on his water bottle.

Sam pulls out bitch-face number eleven. “Is anything about you real?”

The kid grins and bobs his head. “My boobs.”

Dean laughs so hard he almost pulls something.
